Free STEM event for kids at Albert Whitted Airport to include flights, astronaut
Saturday, April 29, 2023 / 2:45-9:30 p.m.
St. Petersburg, FL (April 26, 2023) ─ Students from Tampa Bay area middle and high schools will have a chance to take flight, meet an astronaut and rocket scientist, perform experiments, and more at a free STEM event this weekend.
Hosted by the Friends of Albert Whitted Airport and St. Pete Air, in partnership with PASSAGE, the free Aerospace Day event will be attended by approximately thirty 12-16-year-olds.
Agenda:
2:45 p.m. – Doors open; light snacks served
3:00-3:45 – welcome from Lee Giat; group STEM activities
3:45-4:30 – flight briefings
4:30-6:30 – students are taken on flights (while waiting for their turn, students will explore aircraft engine systems and get “under the hood”)
6:30 – dinner catered by The Hangar restaurant
7:00-8:00 – presentations
- Lee Giat, PASSAGE founder and pilot
- Nicole Stott, NASA astronaut and artist, Clearwater HS grad
- Kevin DeBruin, NASA rocket scientist and educator
8:00 – experiment: making a comet with former NASA astronomer Hellen Tavora
8:30-9:30 – stargazing with telescopes
