Friends of Albert Whitted Airport Scholarships 2023

Our Friends of Albert Whitted Airport flight training scholarships are now available, with applications accepted until March 17, 2023!

These scholarships will help committed young flight students ages 16-24 achieve their Private Pilot rating, which is the first big step in an aviation career.  We are partnering with St. Pete Air and Sol Relief to give students the support they need to be successful.

We offer two kinds of scholarships for St. Petersburg area residents: one for young people who have demonstrated a strong interest in flight training but who could use financial assistance to complete it, and another for those who may be exploring aviation for the first time.

Our Flight Training Scholarships are for those who have a demonstrated interest, ability, and willingness to achieve a Private Pilot license. These scholarships are for $5,000 in flight training.

Some are specifically for female or minority students, who are historically underrepresented in aviation and other science and technical fields.  This will help increase STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) participation among historically underrepresented groups in St. Petersburg.

Recipients may apply again the following year if they have not yet completed training.  We encourage applicants to also explore other scholarships (see links under Additional Aviation Scholarship Resources).

Our Starter Flight Scholarships will provide $1,000 in initial training, to help young people explore what flying is all about. Scholarships will include an online ground school course for the Private Pilot written exam.

Flight training for both scholarships must be done at St. Pete Air, which will partner with Friends of Albert Whitted Airport and provide reduced rates for scholarship winners.  Sol Relief will provide group activities and a mentor program. Sol Relief will also help students find transportation if needed.

We are especially encouraging applications from those attending area high schools, but all young area residents ages 16-24 are eligible and may apply.

Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 17, 2023.  You may use the online form, or download a PDF and submit a scanned copy of the application along with supporting material to CLICK HERE.

If you would like to support our scholarship program, contributions are tax deductible.
