[St. Petersburg, Florida] The economic impact of the Albert Whitted Airport (SPG) is $128 million, up 60% from $79.7 million in 2019, according to a new study by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The FDOT’s Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study was recently released; a previous study was done in 2019.

“Once you take off and you’re in the air as a pilot..it’s hard to describe. I make a living here and I’ve been fighting for this airport for over 30 years. The near 100-year-old airport is critical to the entire Tampa Bay area as a relief site for smaller planes to come to instead of the bigger commercial ones. It’s not home to a bunch of playboys, it’s important to the city of St. Petersburg and it’s training future pilots!”

Carl Wilkerson shared his love story with us. A champion of Albert Whitted Airport for 22 years, Carl owns a plane there. He’s a commercial pilot and flight instructor. His passion, however, is getting inner-city kids excited and interested in aviation.

“I’ve been here since 1997. I have helped 110 people get their final licenses and have taught over 1,000 students. I have from high school age to 76-year-old students!
I love being part of their life. It’s so rewarding. The people are so great here at Albert Whitted Airport. I feel like I belong here. They are family. We love educating and increasing the love for aviation!”
