The economic impact of Albert Whitted Airport climbs to $128 Million

[St. Petersburg, Florida]  The economic impact of the Albert Whitted Airport (SPG) is $128 million, up 60% from $79.7 million in 2019, according to a new study by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The FDOT’s Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study was recently released; a previous study was done in 2019.

Jack Tunstill has spent 35 years as a flight instructor teaching future pilots.

“Once you take off and you’re in the air as a pilot..it’s hard to describe. I make a living here and I’ve been fighting for this airport for over 30 years. The near 100-year-old airport is critical to the entire Tampa Bay area as a relief site for smaller planes to come to instead of the bigger commercial ones. It’s not home to a bunch of playboys, it’s important to the city of St. Petersburg and it’s training future pilots!”

“I’ve been here since 1997. I have helped 110 people get their final licenses and have taught over 1,000 students. I have from high school age to 76-year-old students!

I love being part of their life. It’s so rewarding. The people are so great here at Albert Whitted Airport. I feel like I belong here. They are family. We love educating and increasing the love for aviation!”

Albert Whitted launches education, advocacy campaign – St. Pete Catalyst

As controversial talks continue about the future of the 100-acre Albert Whitted Airport, the airport committee, along with its tenants, wants to remind the community of its significant role in the city. 

The Albert Whitted Airport Advisory Committee has formed the Friends of Albert Whitted Airport group. The group is launching a new campaign dubbed Love 4 AWA that will have several social media pages in the coming weeks.
